The Big Ones Got Away!

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

We did go fishing today and had a wonderful time! Instead of going to the little lake where you can rent john boats, we went to the big lake and fished from the shore.

We used worms from our own worm farm and just a couple fo cheap little rods that we got at Wal-Mart last year. The hard part was finding the fishing tackle in the garage!

The fish were biting all afternoon, and of course we let them loose after we reeled them in. We would never take home the little fish and spoils the next person’s fun who wants to try their luck at fishing. I don’t believe in killing for sport – and since we aren’t going to eat the fish, then we must toss them back. It’s only fair!

Fishing Day Trip

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

It’s been too long since I went fishing. I used to spend hours upon hours on my little boat in the summer with a rod and reel and a little cup of bloodworms for bait. I used to catch buckets of perch and sometimes a few rockfish.

I think we’ll have to gather up the gear from the depths of my garage and find our way over to the lake where we can rent a john boat for half a day. It will be nice to get out of the house and something different. I don’t even care if we just release what we catch. To be honest, I’m not sure the fish caught around here are even safe to eat. But we can still have a nice day throwing a line in the water.

Happy Fourth of July, America!

Friday, July 4th, 2008

I love the Fourth of July. It’s summer’s best day – unless it rains during the fireworks. But that’s never ever happened in all my years of memories.

I love fireworks. I miss the days when people could buy huge boxes of them and take them home to light off in their own yards. My brothers and sisters used to each spend a bunch of money of fireworks and then all of us gather at my father’s beach house to set them off together. We would spend 5-6 hours shooting off fountains in the sand and roman candles over the river. It was always a great day of togetherness and fun. I miss that so much.

Surfing for Clip Art

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Sometimes I happen upon a web site that has a wonderful collection of clip art and photos. More often, though, I find a piece that I like just mixed in with regular text or posts.

I found this one that made me laugh. I’m sorry I forget where I found it. If it is yours, please let me know. Anyway, I laugh because the guy looks just like the jerk that my grandmother married late in life. He was so anal about everything – a total perfectionist and a bitter, unhappy man that drank himself to death on 2-3 six-packs of Busch beer daily. I imagine if one of his neighbors had the ability he would have created this sculpture and targeted  my step-grandfather.
