Willie at the Ryman

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Willie Nelson is in town this week. He’s doing a show at the Ryman Auditorium. It sold out in just an hour when the tickets went on sale, so I didn’t get a chance to see him this time. But some of my favorite memories have to do with prior Willie Nelson concerts. Love that Willie Nelson!

red-azalea

Not even half of the blooms have come out yet and this is only the back half of the bush. When the whole shrub is blooming this is a magnificent plant.

I love azaleas anyway – they are a Southern heritage. Did you know the the world’s capital of azaleas is right here in Tennessee? I have friends in McMinnville who run a nursery. There is a fascinating history to the cultivation of azaleas here. I’ll have to do a little more research on it and fill you in.

Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

This time of year is when I hear all the wonderful Christmas songs, either on the radio or piped in over the store sound systems while you shop.

Some songs mean a lot more to me than others, often because I had to learn them to sing in a performance, either at church or in the school’s holiday musical programs.

One of my favorites is Silent Night. I love that song. It was the first one I ever learned, when I was in kindergarten. I also learned Away in a Manger that same year for my Sunday School class. I’ll always love those two songs at Christmas time.

Merry Christmas!

Fishing Day Trip

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

It’s been too long since I went fishing. I used to spend hours upon hours on my little boat in the summer with a rod and reel and a little cup of bloodworms for bait. I used to catch buckets of perch and sometimes a few rockfish.

I think we’ll have to gather up the gear from the depths of my garage and find our way over to the lake where we can rent a john boat for half a day. It will be nice to get out of the house and something different. I don’t even care if we just release what we catch. To be honest, I’m not sure the fish caught around here are even safe to eat. But we can still have a nice day throwing a line in the water.

Happy Fourth of July, America!

Friday, July 4th, 2008

I love the Fourth of July. It’s summer’s best day – unless it rains during the fireworks. But that’s never ever happened in all my years of memories.

I love fireworks. I miss the days when people could buy huge boxes of them and take them home to light off in their own yards. My brothers and sisters used to each spend a bunch of money of fireworks and then all of us gather at my father’s beach house to set them off together. We would spend 5-6 hours shooting off fountains in the sand and roman candles over the river. It was always a great day of togetherness and fun. I miss that so much.
